Tech Mahindra fresher hiring: complete guide

Tech Mahindra’s fresher process includes a round many candidates do not expect: a short story or essay written to a prompt. Together with the online test, the technical interview and HR, it decides your offer. This guide explains each round with examples, the eligibility rules and a 21-day plan.

Key takeaways

  • Tech Mahindra’s process usually has an online test, a story or essay writing round, a technical interview and HR.
  • The online test covers aptitude, technical questions with coding, and communication.
  • The writing round is scored on grammar and structure; plan before you write.
  • The psychometric section is usually not eliminatory, but answer honestly.
  • Common eligibility: 60 percent throughout, no active backlogs, gap of up to two years.
  • Tech Mahindra never charges candidates.

How Tech Mahindra hires freshers

Tech Mahindra hires engineering freshers through campus drives and off-campus drives announced on its careers site, and holds walk-ins for some support and operations roles. Older drives used third-party adaptive tests, and recent drives describe Tech Mahindra’s own online assessment. Either way, the topics overlap, so the same preparation works.

Who can apply

  • Degree: B.E. or B.Tech (and some MCA or M.Sc drives), as listed in the notice.
  • Marks: commonly 60 percent in class 10, class 12 and your degree.
  • Backlogs: no active backlogs.
  • Education gap: up to two years in many drives, declared on the form.
  • Pass-out year: the batch named in the notice.

Selection process

  1. Online test. Aptitude, technical with coding, communication and a psychometric section.
  2. Story or essay writing. A short piece written to a picture or prompt.
  3. Technical interview. Your project, programming, DBMS and branch basics.
  4. HR interview. Communication, relocation, shifts and documents.

Online test pattern

Recent descriptions give the sections below. Counts and timings vary by drive; read the instructions on the day.

SectionWhat it coversNotes
AptitudeQuantitative, logical and verbalMany questions in a short time: keep moving
TechnicalMCQs on programming and CS basics, plus a coding problemCoding is scored on hidden test cases
CommunicationReading, grammar, listening or speakingEliminatory in most drives
PsychometricStatements about how you workUntimed, usually not eliminatory

Aptitude and technical sections

The aptitude section has a lot of questions for the time, so speed on easy questions matters. Skip anything that needs more than a minute and come back later.

Q.The average of five numbers is 20. If one number is removed, the average becomes 18. What number was removed?

Total of five numbers = 5 × 20 = 100. Total of the remaining four = 4 × 18 = 72.

Removed number = 100 − 72 = 28.

The technical section checks programming basics (loops, functions, OOP), DBMS and operating systems, and includes a coding problem. Practise easy array and string problems until reading input and printing output is automatic.

Story or essay writing

You see a picture or read a short prompt and write a story or passage, usually around 200 words, in a fixed time. It is checked for grammar, spelling, structure and whether the story makes sense.

Q.Prompt: a picture of a student standing at a railway station with a suitcase.

Plan in one minute:

  1. Beginning. Who she is and why she is there: Meera, leaving her town for her first job in Pune.
  2. Middle. A small problem: the train is late and she worries about joining on time.
  3. Turn. She calls the HR contact, who reassures her; she uses the wait to revise her notes.
  4. End. She boards, nervous but ready, thinking of her parents’ pride.

Simple words, short sentences and a clear ending score better than long, complicated language.

Practise this: Write three timed stories from random pictures before your test, and check them for tense and article errors.

Psychometric section

You rate statements such as “I like to plan my work in advance.” There are no right answers. Answer honestly and consistently: the section checks for a steady picture of how you work, and contradictory answers look worse than any single honest answer.

Interviews

  • Explain your final-year project and the hardest part of it.
  • What is the difference between C and C++ (or Java and Python)?
  • Write a program to check whether a number is a palindrome.
  • What is a deadlock in an operating system?
  • Why Tech Mahindra, and are you open to relocation and shifts?

Practise with our interview questions guide, and use our email templates to follow up politely after the interview.

Offer and joining

Offers come by email from Tech Mahindra, followed by document verification. New joiners begin with training before project allocation.

  • Money asked to confirm a Tech Mahindra offer or training slot.
  • An offer letter from a personal email ID.
  • Selection promised without any test or interview.

These are scams. Read our fake job and scam guide.

Common mistakes in the Tech Mahindra process

Most candidates who miss out do so for avoidable reasons. Check yourself against this list a week before the test.

  • Not practising the story writing round before the test.
  • Writing long, complicated sentences full of errors.
  • Spending too long on single aptitude questions in a long, timed section.
  • Answering the psychometric section inconsistently.
  • Skipping the coding problem in the technical section.
  • Missing interview emails because they went to spam.

Test-day checklist

Online tests are proctored through your camera and screen. Small setup problems can end a test early, so run through this list on the day.

  • Charge your laptop and keep the charger plugged in.
  • Test your internet, camera and microphone an hour before.
  • Keep your ID card and admit card or test email ready.
  • Sit alone in a quiet, well-lit room with nothing on the desk.
  • Keep rough paper and a pen only if the instructions allow them.
  • Log in early and read every instruction before starting.
If something goes wrong: Note the time, take a screenshot if you can, and email the support address given in your test invitation straight away. Do not open other websites or apps to look for help during the test.
