HCLTech fresher hiring: complete guide

HCLTech hires freshers through several routes: Graduate Engineer Trainee drives for engineers, walk-in and off-campus drives for support and operations roles, and TechBee, a programme that lets students start working straight after class 12. This guide explains which route fits you, the eligibility, the selection process and how to prepare.

Key takeaways

  • Engineers usually join HCLTech as Graduate Engineer Trainees through campus or off-campus drives.
  • Eligibility, especially the percentage cut-off, changes between drives, so read each notice.
  • The process is usually an online assessment, a technical interview and an HR round.
  • TechBee lets students start working after class 12 and study for a degree alongside.
  • Walk-in drives are common for support roles; carry documents and never pay at the venue.

Graduate Engineer Trainee

Graduate Engineer Trainee is HCLTech’s main entry role for engineering freshers. New joiners are trained and placed on projects in software development, testing, infrastructure or support, depending on the business need and their skills.

Recent listings have mentioned packages of about ₹3.5 to ₹4.5 lakh a year, though some drives have stated other figures. Treat any number you read as an indication and check the one in your offer letter.

Who can apply

  • Degree: B.E. or B.Tech, usually in computer science, IT, electronics and related branches.
  • Pass-out year: the batch named in the drive notice.
  • Marks: drives have asked for 60 to 70 percent in class 10, class 12 and your degree.
  • Backlogs: usually none at the time of joining.
  • Documents: marksheets, degree or provisional certificate, ID proof and photographs.
Check the cut-off first: HCLTech’s percentage cut-off varies more between drives than most companies’. Confirm it before you spend time on an application.

Selection process

  1. Online assessment. Aptitude, reasoning, English and basic programming or technical questions in recent drives.
  2. Technical interview. Your project, programming basics, DBMS and your branch fundamentals.
  3. HR interview. Communication, relocation, shifts and documents.

Some drives combine the interviews or add a communication round; the invitation explains the steps.

Preparing for the test

The online assessment checks the same basics as most IT companies. Focus on accuracy in common topics rather than rare hard ones.

Q.A train 200 m long passes a pole in 10 seconds. What is its speed in km/h?

Speed = 200 ÷ 10 = 20 metres per second.

In km/h: 20 × 18 ÷ 5 = 72 km/h.

TechBee after class 12

TechBee is an early-career programme for students who have just finished class 12, usually with maths in their subjects. Selected students go through training with HCLTech, then start working, and can study for a degree with partner universities at the same time.

  • Good for: students who want to start earning early and learn on the job.
  • Selection: an online test and an interview, as described on HCLTech’s official TechBee pages.
  • Before you join: read the official terms on training, stipend, any fees and the degree arrangement.
  • Compare it with a regular degree: think about the field you want to work in five years from now.

Walk-in drives

HCLTech often holds walk-in drives for support, voice and operations roles. They are a fast route to a job, but also a favourite target of scammers who copy the company’s name.

  • Someone at or near the venue asks for money to “register” you.
  • The drive is only advertised on WhatsApp or by a consultant, not on HCLTech’s own pages.
  • You are promised selection before any interview.

Interview

  • Tell me about yourself and your final-year project.
  • What is the difference between a stack and a queue?
  • What is a primary key? Write a query to find duplicate emails in a table.
  • Why HCLTech, and are you open to any location?
  • Are you comfortable working in rotational shifts?

Practise with our interview questions guide.

Offer and joining

Offers come by email from HCLTech, followed by document verification and joining instructions. New joiners go through training before being assigned to projects.

Never pay anyone to confirm an HCLTech offer. Check any doubtful message with our fake job and scam guide.

Common mistakes in the HCLTech process

Most candidates who miss out do so for avoidable reasons. Check yourself against this list a week before the test.

  • Applying without checking the percentage cut-off for that drive.
  • Going to a walk-in without printed documents and ID.
  • Trusting a walk-in advertised only on WhatsApp.
  • Preparing coding only and ignoring aptitude and English.
  • Saying no to shifts or relocation without thinking it through.
  • Paying anyone who promises a “confirmed” HCLTech offer.

Test-day checklist

Online tests are proctored through your camera and screen. Small setup problems can end a test early, so run through this list on the day.

  • Charge your laptop and keep the charger plugged in.
  • Test your internet, camera and microphone an hour before.
  • Keep your ID card and admit card or test email ready.
  • Sit alone in a quiet, well-lit room with nothing on the desk.
  • Keep rough paper and a pen only if the instructions allow them.
  • Log in early and read every instruction before starting.
If something goes wrong: Note the time, take a screenshot if you can, and email the support address given in your test invitation straight away. Do not open other websites or apps to look for help during the test.
